Stimming, Stims, and stereotypies

Repetitive self-stimulatory behavior is often referred to as Stimming, Stereotypies, or Stims. Stims are repetitive movements, sounds, or actions that individuals may use to regulate sensory input, manage emotions, express excitement, focus, or feel more comfortable. Common examples of stimming include hand flapping, rocking, spinning objects, humming, tapping, or repeating sounds or movements. Stimming is frequently observed among autistic individuals and can also occur in those with ADHD, anxiety, sensory processing differences, and various neurological conditions. Professional and compassionate intervention from a CBIT therapy occupational therapist can provide valuable sensory support, particularly when a stim causes physical discomfort, interferes with daily activities, or limits social interactions. Our patients learn self-regulation techniques that reinforce the idea that it is okay to engage in their stims when desired. Additionally, they are introduced to alternative movements and sounds to help them self-soothe and express themselves more comfortably.
